Have the Terrorists won?

When the towers of the World Trade Center fell, suddenly everyone was a patriot. Politicians fell over themselves trying to out-American the next guy (or gal). Our leaders were in such a frenzy that we went to war...against two nations and against ourselves. The "Patriot Act" (and what a prime example of newspeak ala Orwell that name is) was passed, implementing the greatest infringement on our civil liberties that the country has seen. Not since the days of King George (ironic huh?) have American citizens found themselves with less control of their lives and with less say so in the direction our country will take. Benjamin Franklin once said "Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." By the actions of our elected officials, and the inaction of the potential voters in the U.S., we have handed the terrorists a partial victory already. We have shown ourselves willing to trade the freedoms which America is based on, the freedoms which they hate so much, for an appearance of safety.

This issue is perhaps the most disturbing. Why is there a need to give up liberty in the name of safety in the first place? Are the two mutually exclusive? I'm sure if lawmakers would have stopped long enough to attempt to develop a less invasive strategy, instead of blindly following a bill with a catchy title, we wouldn't be in this predicament or at least we'd feel a little better about it. But like much of politics today, I think they were more concerned with appeasing the emotional masses than with actually trying to solve the problem.

As long as we can legally continue to spew our political and religious thoughts, then they have not won. It’s not the terrorists who scare me.. it’s Bush and his entourage. Apparently they all drank the Kool-aid.

But don't you agree that we (the American citizens) have allowed the actions of the terrorists to change our way of life? It seems as though, at least for a while, we were allowing the politicians to do anything they wanted as long as they invoked the memory of 9/11 and told us it would protect us.

Exactly, exactly. Orwell would kiss your cheek. Now if we could send this message to every voting citizen in this country--aarrggghhh. This lemming cliff-jumping makes me crazy. It's almost like terror breeds fear breeds ignorance breeds manipulation breeds more terror. How do we get off this treadmill? Well at least we are talking about it. That's the first step, right? "Hi, my name is Tumerica. I am influenced by terrorism."
